Transport Refrigeration

The term ‘transport refrigeration’ covers several applications including refrigerated vans, refrigerated trucks and trailers and fishing vessels.

HFC 404A is the most commonly used refrigerant in transport refrigeration and it has a 100 year GWP of 3922. A leak of just 10kgs of this potent greenhouse gas has the same impact as a passenger car driving for almost a year! Transport refrigeration is now focused on natural alternatives including CO2, ammonia, liquid nitrogen and hydrocarbons.

American Freedom, one of the world’s largest reefer ships, uses a cascade ammonia and CO2 refrigeration system, helping to generate a cooling output of 4,500kW. The cascade system is able to process around 400 tons of fish per day, storing catch in the hull of the ship where there are 36 vertical plate freezers in operation.
