Parramatta City Council in Australia to mandate the use of natural refrigerants in all new air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment.

The plan aims to move equipment away from R-32 with GWP 771 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while future proofing cooling systems.

Major developer Meriton supports the plan and has already introduced hydrocarbons to a number of projects in Sydney. A 12-storey riverfront apartment in Parramatta has replaced R22 units with 157 hydrocarbon split systems provided by Pioneer International. The units have delivered outstanding energy efficiency results according to the source.

To accommodate the move to hydrocarbons, Grosvenor Engineering Group have introduced dedicated natural refrigerant technology support and is working with a number of property owners to switch to natural refrigerant chillers in their buildings.
