As of September 2018, Indian manufacturer Godrej had sold over 600,000 R-290 based (propane) room air-conditioning units across India. The ‘Green Balance’ units have received a five-star energy efficiency rating, the highest available rating award by India’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
Godrej have developed a system to help ensure safe installation and use of this Cool Technology, with no incidents to date. They have a standardised training program and a pool of over 5,000 certified technicians. Each technician has a unique code, ensuring only a Godrej-trained and certified technician can service and installs these systems.
Godrej and the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusamenarbeit (GIZ) are working together to support training for safe installation and servicing in several countries across South East Asia, with pilot projects in Indonesia. In addition, Indonesian and Thai room air-conditioner manufacturers have visited Godrej’s R-290 unit manufacturing facilities. It is hoped that these will help pave the way for the uptake of propane room air conditioners across the region.
