Aldi Sud

Case Study - Refrigeration / Commercial

In January 2010, the giant German food discount chain, Aldi Sud, began to implent a plan to only install CO2 refrigeration systems in new stores in Germany. This plan has spread across its European stores. In 2017, it had 111 CO2 cascade systems in Austria, five in Hungary and four in Slovakia, plus eight stores using CO2 transcritical in Switzerland. From 2017, CO2 systems will be installed in all new stores in the UK and Republic of Ireland. In April 2017, Aldi Sud reached its 1000th CO2 installation, estimating that 54% of its stores now run on CO2. Combining CO2 refrigeration with heat recovery is leading to energy savings.
